I have been in the people business all my life. As a kid, I wrote and directed plays for the neighborhood kids, then went on to earn a degree in theater. Despite vociferous doubts from some family and friends, this turned out to be a stroke of genius. For four years, I spent time learning how to work closely and productively in teams with diverse groups of people who produce and think differently from each other, often not even understanding each other, all to accomplish one single vision – opening night. No choice here. The play MUST open on deadline, and it MUST be good, or audiences don’t come back, and you close your business. I often tell people, I actually majored in Real Life Problem Solving.

I never worked professionally in theater, but I have applied those valuable skills in all my career endeavors. As chief development officer for a rural community college, as executive director of a national association, as principal of my own consulting company. The key was, and is, people. I learned to listen carefully, ask questions, confirm what I heard, envision the desired result, make a plan that included all the players, and follow through.
